No. 23
OPERATION LOYALIST
1961, Leonid Rogozov, 27, was the only surgeon in the Soviet Antarctic Expedition. During the expedition, he felt severe pain in the stomach and had a high fever. Rogozov examined himself and discovered that his appendix was inflamed and could burst at any time. With a local anesthesia, he operated himself to remove the appendix. An engineer and a meteorologist assisted surgery.

BLUE BALLS // BALL BLUE // IT'S JUST A JAR PEOPLE
The Ball Brothers (all 5 of them) started the Ball Branded glass jar company in 1884, New York. While the Ball Brothers had a thing for Blue Ball Jars, the company still exists today manufacturing a myriad of other products - not all of them blue (actually very few are Blue). Originally the Blue Ball jars were number on the bottom by production year and lot numbers. Today that allows for a...

These guys were voted “Cap of the Year”, didn’t know there was an award or that people voted. But the people are right these guys make some mighty fine Caps.

LAMOND | BULLIVANT | IGGULDEN
As a kid I never had a book like this. If I had had a book with similar contents I don’t think I would have really paid it much attention. A friend had the anarchist’s cookbook, and that enlightened us to dry ice bombs (which earned him about 45 scars in a “mailbox bombing” gone wrong). But the anarchists cookbook, while full of valuable information to future terrorists, lacks in - or...

NATURE // TORNADOES
As a Child, My biggest demon and fear was a swirling mass of air and debris. In the night as nightmares would fill my mind I could hear the roar and destruction so vividly I would often wake and rush to the window, only to find everything still and calm - peace still intact. To me it wasn’t the stories of ghosts and cyclops lurking under my bed - it was the reality of what nature might...

GABBEH PERSIAN RUG OR ROTHKO?
The word ‘Gabbeh’ comes from the Persian language meaning raw, natural, uncut. This is a rough and primitive carpet. To me they all look like a version of a Rothko, which as they say “if it looks like a Rothko - It can’t be wrong.” (Let’s play my favorite Sesame Street guessing game - Rug or Rothko? Can you tell? I sure had a hard time guessing)
and...

PIETER HUGO // NOLLYWOOD // HYENA
Pieter Hugo had a show at his NY gallery a few years ago for “Hyena & other men”. I was blown away by the images (not to mention at the sight of physically how big a Hyena actually is). Pieter, like all great photographers, has a way of making his subjects look oblivious to the fact that a camera is in the room. In today’s immediate digital media age everyone is aware of...

ARNOLD PALMER, not just a great drink.
Arnold Palmer was one of the greatest players to ever grace the game of golf. Not only did he play with style and composure, he embodied a sense of greatness. Television was “boss” in the 1950’s and golf tournaments were receiving record breaking attendance. Soon golf was the star of saturday and sunday programming. If video killed the radio star, it had just...

NEW COLE HAAN LOGO
New Cole Haan Identity logo redesigned by VSA Partners. VSA is great branding and Design company based all over the place. I was in their offices in NY a few years ago for a meeting - and the place is impressive. They have been around since the early 80’s and while MadMen paints a great image of the old ad guys drink and womanizing, I kinda prefer the idea of an Ad man in the...

TIKAL GUATEMALA
I travelled to Tikal in 2009 as part of a 3 week trip through Central America. The Ruins of Tikal were the film location they used for Yavin in Star Wars Episode IV, and rightfully so, this place looks like it was from another planet. Not too long ago I watched a Ken Burns film, ‘Lewis and Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discovery.’ It was such a great film documenting the travel...
